A faulty injector does not automatically mean buying new. In many cases professional
repair is the more economical choice — provided it is done properly.
When repair pays off, when it does not, and what to look out for.
What does a new injector cost?
The price range is wide — and often underestimated. Depending on manufacturer, system and vehicle:
- Bosch Common Rail, cars: €150–400 each (new part)
- Denso / Delphi: a similar range
- Piezo injectors: €300–700 and above
- Truck injectors: €400–1,200 per unit
On a four-cylinder engine with four faulty injectors that quickly comes to €1,500–3,000 for parts alone — before fitting. On a truck, correspondingly more.
What does a repair cost?
A professional repair by a specialist usually comes to 30–60% of the price of a new part. The exact figure depends on condition, system type and the work involved.
What matters is this: after the repair the injector has to be measured on a calibrated test bench and documented. Without a test report it is not a repair — it is parts being swapped with no quality assurance.
When is repair worthwhile?
Repair makes sense when:
- The injector body is intact (no mechanical write-off)
- Deviations from the target values are measurable but not extreme
- The vehicle or machine will stay in service for several more years
- Several injectors are affected at once (economies of scale)
- It concerns trucks, construction machinery or fleet vehicles, where costs feed straight into the margin
When is replacement the better choice?
There are cases where repair makes no sense:
- The injector has a mechanical crack or a destroyed nozzle body
- The vehicle is very old and its overall condition does not justify the investment
- The injector has already been repaired several times and has reached its wear limit
- Affordable new-part alternatives (remanufactured units, for example) are available for the model
In those cases we say so openly — even when it means there is no job for us.
The most common mistake: repair without measurement
Many workshops clean injectors, replace nozzles or valves and refit everything — without then checking the injector for injection quantity, return flow and switching behaviour.
The problem: an injector can look clean and still operate outside tolerance. The engine runs worse than before, or the fault returns after a short time.
A proper repair always ends with a test bench measurement and a test report. That is the only way to know the injector is genuinely working to manufacturer specification again.
Repair or replace — at a glance
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Body intact, values out of range | ✓ Repair worthwhile |
| Several injectors affected | ✓ Repair worthwhile |
| Truck / fleet / high new-part price | ✓ Repair worthwhile |
| Mechanical write-off | ✗ Replacement recommended |
| Vehicle an economic write-off | ✗ Replacement recommended |
| Affordable remanufactured option available | Assess case by case |
What we do at INP
Every injector that reaches us is diagnosed first — before we give a recommendation. If a repair makes no economic sense, we say so. If it does, we carry it out, measure the result on the test bench and document all values in the test report.
That way you know exactly what you are paying for.
Not sure whether a repair is worthwhile?
Send us the vehicle type and injector type — we will come back to you on
the same working day with an honest assessment. Free and without obligation.
